The Kiss In The Tunnel

The Kiss in the Tunnel (1899) used shots to give a story to audiences. In that movie, director used some black background to make it partly hidden and partly visible and gave audiences more spaces to imagine. Their expression, their behavior and so on also showed the love between these two people. They are shy, avoid others, and don't want others see them at first. And this image built a phenomenon which is dubious relationship. So, this is the important point that narrative films came out. Also, films became more popular than before. But the cinemas didn't have a good influnces at that time. The important point is the Paris Charity Bazzar Fire (1897). Cinemas also made some bad effects on people. For instance, there were some boys steel things because they saw some films about that. So, after the bad reputation on cinemas, The Kiss in the Tunnel (1899) gave a good beginning at the narrative films.

From my perspective, it is true that the uses of cinema are from different aspects to tell a history of cinema. But in the The Kiss in the Tunnel (1899), I don't think it is helpful for the education, news, and globalization. It only told people a story that poeple fell in love and didn't give a good effect on children.

  1. I found your point about how film can have a bad effect on people. As most films are fiction, I do understand it can serve as a fantasy for others. Do you think should be to blame for this though or should there be supervision over what people are watching?

  2. Not to lie the acting of the actor in this film is really good, he shows all his careful, dubious, ambiguous movement towards the female. With the foreshadow of the train running into the tunnel, the hidden private feeling being set up even more.

  3. I think this is really interesting because I only thought about it in a sense of if it serves as an educational 'tool' or if it is purely artistic. But you bring up more important things to look at such as news and globalization.

  4. In a period of time where public displays of affection were taboo as they were during the Victorian period in England, this film would have been quite scandalous. People would not have been used to seeing this private and intimate view of affection. So this film may have had some unintended educational consequences as well as entertainment value.
